It is also called Jade Buddha Temple because it belongs to Zen Linji law system and practices Buddhism. Jade Buddha Temple is one of the top ten tourist attractions in Shanghai. Although it is located in the bustling urban area, it is called a pure land in downtown. The founder and first abbot of jade Buddha Temple is master Huigen.

Historical evolution
In 1882, in the eighth year of Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty, master Huigen of Putuo Mountain went to Wutai, followed by Emei, Tibet, India, Myanmar after Buddha worship. Under the sponsorship of the local overseas Chinese, he opened a mountain to collect jade, carved five jade Buddhas, and asked to return to Putuo Mountain. When passing through Shanghai, one sitting Buddha and one Reclining Buddha are left, that is to say, a jade Buddha Temple is built in Jiangwan Town for worship.
The earliest Jade Buddha Temple was built in 1900, the 26th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, on the side of Wusong Jiangwan station, under the leadership of master Benzhao, a disciple of master Huigen. After the Xinhai Revolution, the temple was destroyed by fire and war, and only the Jade Buddha survived. Once upon a time, the villa on shedangen Road (now Wei'an Road) in shengxuanhuai was used as the temple to worship the Jade Buddha.
In the seventh year of the Republic of China (1918), the Buddhist temple was destroyed by fire and war, so it was rebuilt at the current site. The new temple was renamed "Jade Buddha Temple". Since the seventh year of the Republic of China (1918), the monks of Linji sect, a Buddhist sect, have been able to build a new temple at this site. After ten years of "bowing, camping, and striving to build", Yufo temple has been successively built into a group of imitation song temple buildings, such as Buddhist temple, pavilion, zhaichu, etc., which makes Yufo Temple "dandangu, Guling, Chonghong magnificent, magnificent, and magnificent, as a giant temple, Jiayu on the sea."
In the thirty first year of the Republic of China (1942), master Yuanchen, the abbot of Yufo temple, founded Shanghai Buddhist Institute in the temple. Zhenhua master of Zhulin temple, Zhenjiang, was invited to be the dean and Dean of academic affairs, and 30 academic monks were recruited. Later for various reasons.
After the founding of new China, jade Buddha Temple has been listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit, and the state has repeatedly allocated funds for maintenance.
On January 8, 1963, Premier Zhou Enlai personally accompanied Mrs. bandaranaik, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, to the Jade Buddha Temple to participate in the commemoration ceremony for the 64th anniversary of the birth of bandaranaik, former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
In the "Cultural Revolution", under the protection of the municipal Party committee, the governments at all levels, relevant units, cadres, masses and monks in the temple cooperated with each other to keep the whole temple building intact, and the Scriptures, Buddhist statues, instruments and legacies were also intact. The two jade Buddhas were intact, and all Buddhist activities were stopped.
After October 1976, in order to implement the policy of freedom of religious belief, the jade Buddhist temple was reopened as a Buddhist activity place, and the "jade Buddhist temple management committee" was established, and the wandering monks returned to the temple one after another. Funds have also been pulled out to repair the temple, which has been in disrepair for a long time. Since the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee, the jade Buddhist temple has been under its own management, and the Buddhist circles in Shanghai have promoted the positions of abbot, supervisor and other monks according to the temple system.
In 1979, master Zhen Chan served as the abbot of jade Buddha Temple and restored the ten sided forest system of Buddhism.
Since 1981, various Buddhist dharma meetings have been resumed.
In 1983, Shanghai Buddhist Association restored Shanghai Buddhist Institute in Yufo temple.
In July 2006, Yufo temple and East China Normal University jointly initiated the establishment of "East China Normal University Jue Qun Buddhist Culture Research Institute", and published two research monographs, "urban development mode of human Buddhism" and "Tibetan Buddhism and harmonious society".
Architectural pattern
Yufo temple is an imitation Song Dynasty palace building with strict layout, covering an area of about 11.6 Mu and a building area of 8856 square meters. The building of jade Buddha Temple follows the style of the temple in Song Dynasty. On the central axis, there are three kinds of halls: Tianwang hall, Daxiong hall and jade Buddha building. On the East and west sides, there are Guanyin hall, bronze Buddha Hall, Lying Buddha Hall, Huaien hall, Zen hall, Zhaitang, etc. and there are cultural relic room, French logistics reference office and vegetarian restaurant. There are more than 200 halls.
The first entrance to the temple is the heavenly king's palace. The second entrance main hall is the Mahavira hall, with the medicine master Buddha in the Oriental glass world on the east side and the Amitabha Buddha in the Western Paradise on the west side. At the back of the hall is a wall sculpture of "island Guanyin". In the middle is a bottle of water purification method, a fish on the feet and a Bodhisattva of "great compassion and salvation". The third entrance is the Abbot's room. On the front wall is a picture of Dharma, the first ancestor of Zen. The Jade Buddha building is on the top floor of the Abbot's room. In the center of the hall is the statue of jade Buddha invited by master Huigen. There is a white jade Reclining Buddha in the west side of the temple.
Main building
Main hall
Daxiong hall is the main building in the temple. It is about 30 meters long and 25 meters wide (7 wide and 5 deep). Its appearance is a song style two-story palace building, simple and solemn. In the center of the hall is Sakyamuni Buddha, with Amitabha Buddha and herbalist Buddha on both sides. The three great Buddhas sit on the lotus seat with a peaceful look. The Buddha statue is 4 meters high and covered with gold, which makes the whole hall look splendid and solemn. On the caisson above Sakyamuni Buddha's head, there is a vivid and interesting picture of the naked Dharma of Sakyamuni's birth and the swirling stripe of Jiulong's water bathing for him.
